Common Explanations
- Sleep Paralysis - Sleep paralysis is a naturally occurring phenomenon of paralysis of the body to prevent thrashing around and injuring yourself in sleep. Sometimes we can partially wake up, but remain paralyzed, some people may even feel a heavy weight on their chests or suffocation. However, this is not to worry because being in that state is not life threatening. Unfortunately, our minds continue to project dreams, which are mostly nightmarish.
- Lack of Sleep - Extreme fatigue can lead to hallucinations, as well as agitation, anxiety, and paranoia.
- Loss of Vision - Usually age-related and caused by conditions like macular degeneration, also known as Charles Bonnet syndrome, can cause hallucinations. However, people with these symptoms usually are aware of what is not real.
- Pareidolia - Pareidolia is a physiological phenomenon where the mind perceives a familiar pattern of something where non actually exist. Such as seeing a face in an electrical outlet, or clouds shaped like animals.
- Fata Morgana - A type of mirage typically seen on the horizon while sailing the ocean, this can also be caused by moisture in the air and the bending of light.
- Heat - Heat can cause a number of mirages, and can even induce hallucinations. If the temperatures are high enough, and if an individual is dehydrated, one can be vulnerable to a heat stroke. Heat strokes can typically cause confusion, disorientation, and even delusions or hallucinations.
- Mental Illness - Some mental illnesses can lead to hallucinations and paranoid delusions, namely schizophrenia, and can be induced by prolonged stress. However, it comes down to you to determine what you have experienced. If you are concerned that you may have a mental illness, please seek the services of a licensed therapist or psychologist.
- Neurological Conditions - Progressive neurological conditions like Dementia and Parkinson's disease, can also cause hallucinations. Most of these conditions are age-related, and are also followed by memory loss, and problems with sleeping.
- Drug Use - There is debate on whether seeing the world through hallucinogens is real or not, that however belongs to the branch of metaphysics. If your are under the influence of a mind-altering substance please be sure to let us know. Also be aware that people can accidentally consume mind-altering substances, whether eating moldy bread, drinking a spiked drink, or taking the wrong medicine(s).
- Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - Carbon Monoxide is an undetectable gas that can only be detected by special equipment. CO poisoning can cause hallucinations, delusions, loss of consciousness, and death. If you work or live near any source of gas or combustion, and are worried of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, please visit the CDC.gov website.
- Electromagnetic Fields - Although electromagnetic fields generally don't cause hallucinations. However, if you are near or came into close contact with a high-emission source, like an antenna or radar array, than this can most likely cause hallucinations.
- Infrasound - Exposure to sounds below 20kHz can cause fear, sorrow, depression, anxiety, nausea, chest pain, and hallucinations. Infrasound can occur quite naturally at certain locations and possible causes can be due to storms, earthquakes, waterfalls, volcanoes, ocean waves, and with wind reacting to certain structures (ie. chimneys).
